Maintaining social distance while learning about design

It’s been more than 6 months since the World Health Organization declared a global outbreak due to COVID-19, leading to people remaining safe at home.

During this time, chances are you nurtured a habit, which is great. Or maybe you spent a lot of time resting or watching films and shows, which is also great.

However, if you’re looking to watch interesting content about design and UX, with substantial knowledge from respected design references, then the following list is for you.

If you’ve ever felt the need to argue against the use of dropdowns in the products and experiences you design, this video will equip you with everything you need, in the most humorist way possible.

Erika Hall on Research Done Right (50 min)

Author Erika Hall demystifies the misconceptions of doing design research in agile companies, by following an evidence-based approach, and starting with the agreement of building better products, faster

Dan M. Brown on IA Lenses (26 min)

Mike Monteiro on how to better present design (60 min)

Presenting work is a crucial part of our jobs as designers, yet a skill that takes a lot of time to hone. Mike presents 13 bad habits designers might have when it comes to showcasing their work to get buy-in, and some recommendations around them.

Jared Spool on the evolution of a new design revolution (120 min)

Jared Spool delivers a great presentation that gravitates around approaching design from different levels of resolution, such as screen-wide (UI), application-wide (UX), organization-wide (Service Design), and his theory of a level higher, which I am not spoiling.

Jeff Gothelf & Josh Seiden on Sense and Respond

Jeff & Josh apply the principles of Lean UX and Sense and Respond to the farming industry. Watch if you’re interested in learning about hypothesis-driven design, designing for outcomes instead of outputs, and the impact of culture beyond technology.

High resolution with Daniel Burka (68 min)

“Don’t make anything unless is necessary, but if it’s necessary don’t hesitate in making it beautiful”

High resolution is a series of great interviews to design experts, and the one with Daniel Burka is a great gateway drug as Daniel eloquently talks about the role of designers as part of a multidisciplinary team, gaining stakeholder influence, and the advantages / disadvantages of design sprints.

Abby Covert on how to make sense of any mess (27 min)

What is the difference between information and content?

What is the impact of language in the user experience?

How to make the world a clearer place?

These are some of the questions Abby answers throughout her talk about the value of Information Architecture in UX.

Marc Stickdorn on Service Design

Service Design presents several challenges when it comes to implementation. This is why Marc Stickdorn argues that ideation is overrated and prototyping is underrated. Furthermore, he presents several arguments against the myth of a linear design process, as well as providing tools to embracing challenges from a service design approach.
